Frequently Asked Questions
I know that we need help, but I'm not sure where to start.
The college application process is complex, requiring many steps that may be new for students and parents alike. We offer a wide range of college planning packages that start with students as young as eighth grade, while others start as late as their senior year. Ideally, we would like all students to receive the most guidance possible. During the initial consultation, parents' and students' needs will be discussed to assess the package that can provide your student the best chance for success.
To which schools should I apply? How many?
Most schools require at least one essay as part of the Common Application, a 650-word essay commonly referred to as a Personal Statement. Some schools might further require supplemental essays ranging anywhere from 50 – 650 words; more competitive schools ask for several additional high quality essays. It is recommended that a student apply to at least five schools, although some students apply to as many as fifteen. Our junior-year program helps students begin the writing process by helping them draft several essays that can answer a variety of essay questions, allowing them to be one step ahead when college applications are released.
How much work will I need to do? How much help do I need?
Some families only want the bare minimum, providing only a guide of what needs to be done, and they’ll do the rest. Others want us to be involved in every part of the process, from assigning SAT dates and due dates for essay drafts, to arranging college visits and preparing students with their own ”brand.” We want students and families to not only feel confident when going into the college application season but also to have a better sense of what they want out of these exciting four years.
We need all the help we can get. What do you offer?
There are many people willing to help high school students complete their college applications, from parents to high school counselors. What we offer at Excel Academy goes beyond the mere completion of applications. The Excel Experience Initiative is an innovative program developed through years of experience in the field. The Initiative's aim is twofold: to help students cultivate their own brand, and to help them to express their experiences and hopes for the future with both confidence and enthusiasm. This new attitude comes through in their applications, helping them to stand out in a highly competitive field.
This option is not for everybody. It requires a weekly commitment and a willingness to be open to new ideas and experiences. The results, however, are unparalleled, extending far beyond the college application experience.
