Nor the SAT nor the ACT is harder than the other – but each test will suit a different type of student. It’s smart to figure out which test is best suited for you, so that you can get the highest scores possible.
The math area for both the tests also stand out. Both tests focus mainly on algebra, but unlike the SAT, the ACT also has a larger section on geometry and trigonometry, and the ACT will let you use calculators for all aspects of the test (whereas the SAT has one math part that does not allow a calculator).
A common perception is that elite colleges prefer the SAT over the ACT. In reality, all colleges and universities which require standardized testing will accept BOTH the ACT and SAT. And college admissions counselors have fairly stated they do not prefer one test over the other.
SAT is officially more popular than the ACT with 55% of the market share. More than 2.2 million young students in the class of 2019 took the SAT compared with about 1.8 million students who took the ACT.
