Improve reading comprehension at a higher level and grow as a student

 Students will be assigned a article from The Learning Network (students receive a link). The article will be a humanities piece, a current events story, an opinion piece, or a scientific discovery/advancement report. Students will read the article in order to fulfill the student learning outcomes listed below.

Curated and led by an expert instructor

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • USE NEW VOCABULARY— Identify previously unknown vocabulary in each article; look up words; use appropriately in sentences students write.  Students may be asked by the instructor to identify/define any word appearing in the article.

  • IDENTIFY MAIN IDEA OR THEMES — Write one paragraph identifying writers’ main ideas and themes. The paragraphs must also identify how the writers’ develop point or theme [to demonstrate students’ reading comprehension].

  • VERBAL EXPRESSION —  Curated and led by an instructor) students participate in a group discussion on the opinions, opposite opinions, similarities to other opinions, artists or artwork (if humanities), solutions, social/scientific/political implications, historical connections of selected articles.

  • RESPONSE WRITING  — Students write a paragraph personal response: what are the students’ opinions (or response) to the article, what was interesting to the student, what parallels the interests of the student, what might the student have done if in the writer’s or article’s subject’s position?

  • Level 1 (Grade 4 -5) Monday 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM 
  • Level 2 (Grade 6-7) Tuesday 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
  • Level 3 (Grade 7-8) Thursday 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
  • PSAT (Grade 9-10) Wednesday 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
  • SAT/ACT (Grade 10-12) Wednesday 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
